What Is Car Maintenance?

Scheduled minor and major servicing on a checklist you actually see. In practice it means minor service: oil, oil filter, air filter, cabin filter, full fluid top-up, plus the checks that confirm the fault was what it looked like.

A service is only worth what was actually inspected. Ours runs off a written checklist you get a copy of, with the measurements filled in — pad thickness in millimetres, tyre depth per corner, battery voltage and cranking amps, fluid conditions — so you can see what was checked and what the numbers were, rather than a stamped book and a bill.

Minor versus major, and when each is due

A minor service is oil, filters and fluids — roughly every 10,000 km here. A major adds the items on longer intervals: spark plugs, fuel filter, brake fluid, coolant, transmission fluid. Most cars want a major every third service or every 40,000 km, whichever comes first, and skipping the major is how a car ends up with six-year-old brake fluid.

A checklist by mileage

At 10,000 km: oil, filters, tyre rotation, brake inspection. At 40,000: add spark plugs, brake fluid, cabin and fuel filters. At 60,000: transmission fluid, coolant, suspension inspection. At 100,000: timing belt if your engine has one rather than a chain, water pump, full ignition system. Missing the timing belt interval is the single most expensive omission on that list.

Why it matters more here

Dubai compresses every wear cycle a car has. Ambient heat, fine airborne sand and the stop-start driving that most local mileage is made of mean components reach a given wear state at a lower odometer reading than the manufacturer's schedule assumes. Service intervals written for temperate climates are optimistic here, and this job is one of the places that shows.

How to tell it was done properly

You should be shown the old part, told what the test read before and after, and given the price you were quoted rather than a revised one. Those three are cheap for an honest workshop to provide and awkward for a dishonest one, which is exactly why they are worth asking for.

What the job includes

  • Minor service: oil, oil filter, air filter, cabin filter, full fluid top-up
  • Major service: the above plus fuel filter, spark plugs, brake fluid, coolant
  • Full inspection with recorded measurements, not tick boxes
  • Battery health test with cranking amps, not just a voltage reading

Questions we get asked

How often should I service my car in Dubai?

Every 10,000 km or every six months for a minor service, whichever comes first. Dubai's heat and dust justify the shorter interval even where the handbook allows longer.

What is included in a full car service?

Engine oil and filter, air filter, cabin filter, all fluid levels, a battery health test, brake and tyre measurements, suspension and steering inspection, and a diagnostic scan. You get the recorded figures.

Will servicing outside the dealer void my warranty?

No. UAE law and standard practice allow independent servicing provided the correct parts and specifications are used and the work is documented, which is exactly what our checklist is for.
