For MG, EFB or AGM on start-stop models; the electric range uses a conventional 12V battery that is easy to overlook because the car is otherwise electric. Most of the current range has a start-stop system, which means AGM or EFB is the floor, not an upgrade — a standard flooded battery in a start-stop car is cycled far beyond what it was built for and typically fails inside a year.

We mention it because a battery call-out is the cheapest time to have someone look at the rest of the car, and because the same heat that killed the battery has been working on everything else under the bonnet for the same number of summers.

On most of the range it is under the bonnet, front-left. That matters more than it sounds: the quote you are given over the phone assumes a location, and a battery that turns out to be under a seat or in the boot is a different job. We ask for the model and year before quoting, so the price you are told is the price you pay.

Can you tell whether it is the battery or the alternator?

Yes, on the spot. We test the battery under load and then check charging voltage with the engine running. If the alternator is the fault, fitting a battery would have solved nothing and we will say so.
