Most Volkswagen Crafter calls we take start the same way: it turned over slowly for a few days, then one morning it just clicked.
Model years from roughly 2014 onward are likely to have a start-stop system, and a start-stop car cycles its battery hundreds of times more often than a conventional one. A standard flooded battery in that duty typically fails within a year. AGM or EFB is not an upsell here — it is the specification.
DSG gearboxes want their fluid and filter service on schedule, and here that schedule should be read as a maximum rather than a target. For the battery specifically: park in shade where you can, drive far enough to actually recharge rather than only starting the car, and have it load-tested before summer rather than after. A battery that reads 12.4 volts at rest can still fail its load test, and the load test is the one that predicts the morning it does not start.
The Crafter is an SUV, so it carries a physically larger battery than a saloon of the same age and a heavier parked electrical load. That is not a detail — battery choice is driven as much by physical size, hold-down type and parked current draw as it is by cranking amps, and getting one of the three wrong is how a correctly-specified battery ends up failing early.
Start-stop models take AGM or EFB and need the replacement coded; fitting a standard battery disables start-stop and eventually confuses the charging strategy. On the Crafter specifically, which the vehicle database lists across model years 2006 to 2026, the safe approach is to read the label on the battery that is in the car now and match its group size, terminal side and capacity — or to give us the year and let us look it up.
