Signs You Need AC Gas Refilling

Most cars give warning before an AC re-gas becomes urgent. The signs below are the ones that matter, and the useful skill is telling them apart from the faults that look identical from the driver's seat.

Refrigerant is measured by weight, not by pressure or by feel, and every car has its exact charge printed on a sticker under the bonnet. We evacuate the system, hold vacuum to confirm it is not leaking, then charge to that stated weight with the correct refrigerant and the correct oil. A system charged by guesswork cools worse than one charged correctly, whether it is over or under.

What the car is telling you

Symptoms are evidence, not diagnoses. A noise, a warning light or a change in how the car behaves narrows the field — it does not close it — and the gap between the two is where money gets wasted on parts that were fine. We test before replacing, every time, because the alternative is you paying to find out.

Why we vacuum before charging

Air and moisture left in an AC system do not compress, so they occupy space the refrigerant needed and raise head pressure. Worse, moisture reacts with the refrigerant and PAG oil to form acid, which corrodes the system from inside. Pulling a deep vacuum boils that moisture out. Skipping it is the difference between a re-gas that lasts and one that damages the compressor.

Overcharging is as bad as undercharging

Too much refrigerant raises high-side pressure, cuts cooling, and puts liquid where the compressor expects gas. Because a system in Dubai's heat reads high pressure anyway, charging by gauge alone leads to undercharging in an attempt to keep pressures down. Charging by weight avoids the whole problem.

When it stops being something to monitor

If the symptom changes under load, gets worse with heat, or brings a warning light with it, it has moved from "watch it" to "book it". In Dubai the heat variable is not a footnote — a fault that is intermittent in February is continuous in July, and the failure usually happens on the hottest afternoon rather than the coolest.

What we check to confirm it

  • Recovery of the existing charge and full system evacuation
  • Vacuum hold test — a system that will not hold vacuum is leaking
  • Charge to the manufacturer's stated weight with correct PAG oil
  • Vent temperature measured before and after

Questions we get asked

How often does car AC gas need refilling?

A sealed system should never need refilling. If yours is low, it is leaking, and the leak is the actual repair. Refilling alone buys weeks to months.

How long does an AC re-gas take?

About an hour: recovery, vacuum, hold test, charge and temperature check. We can do it at your location.

How cold should my vents be?

In Dubai summer, roughly 6-10 degrees at the centre vent on full recirculation after ten minutes. Much above that with a correct charge points at airflow, the blend door or the condenser.
