Most cars give warning before a wheel alignment becomes urgent. The signs below are the ones that matter, and the useful skill is telling them apart from the faults that look identical from the driver's seat.
If the steering wheel sits off-centre on a straight road, the car drifts when you relax your grip, or the tyres are wearing on one edge, the geometry has moved. Four-wheel alignment measures camber, caster and toe on every corner against the factory figures and brings them back, which is the difference between a set of tyres lasting 50,000 km and lasting 15,000.
Symptoms are evidence, not diagnoses. A noise, a warning light or a change in how the car behaves narrows the field — it does not close it — and the gap between the two is where money gets wasted on parts that were fine. Balancing corrects weight distribution around a wheel and cures vibration that appears at a particular speed. Alignment corrects the angles the wheels sit at and cures pulling, off-centre steering and uneven wear. A vibration at 100 km/h is balancing; a pull to the left is alignment.
