Recovery is what happens when the car cannot be driven and cannot simply be rolled onto a truck — after an accident, out of soft sand, out of a basement with a seized handbrake, or off a road with a wheel that no longer points forward. It needs a winch, skates and someone who has done it before, because this is where cars get damaged twice.
Most cars have exactly one or two rated recovery eyes, often stored with the jack and screwed into a threaded socket behind a bumper cover.
