A flat on Sheikh Zayed Road at 2pm in August is not a job to attempt yourself on the hard shoulder. We come out, get the car onto the spare or repair the tyre in place if it is repairable, and check the other three while we are there — because the same nail-strewn stretch of road that got one usually got another.
A tyre driven on while flat destroys its own sidewall from the inside within a few hundred metres, which turns a repairable puncture into a new tyre. It can also damage the rim. Pull over safely, stop, and call — that decision is usually worth several hundred dirhams.
A run-flat will carry you roughly 80 km at up to 80 km/h with no air, which is genuinely useful. It is also generally not repairable once it has been run flat, because the reinforced sidewall has been heat-cycled.
