What Is Suspension Alignment?

Camber, caster and toe corrected after knocks, drift or uneven tyre wear. In practice it means four-wheel camber, caster and toe measurement against factory specification, plus the checks that confirm the fault was what it looked like.

Suspension geometry drifts out of specification gradually — a kerb here, a speed bump taken too fast there — and the first thing you notice is usually the tyres, not the handling. We measure all three angles on all four wheels against the manufacturer's figures and correct what can be corrected, after checking that the worn component causing the drift is not the real problem.

Alignment is a symptom as often as a cause

A car will not hold an alignment if the bushes, ball joints or top mounts holding the geometry are worn. Adjusting the angles on a car with a failed lower arm bush is money spent on something that will move again within a month. We check the hardware first and tell you if the alignment is not the actual job.

What Dubai roads do to suspension

Long, smooth, fast roads are easy on suspension. Aggressive speed bumps, high kerbs in older communities, and the heat cycling that hardens rubber bushes are not. Bushes and top mounts here perish from heat and UV as much as from impact, which is why a low-mileage car can still need them.

Why it matters more here

Dubai compresses every wear cycle a car has. Ambient heat, fine airborne sand and the stop-start driving that most local mileage is made of mean components reach a given wear state at a lower odometer reading than the manufacturer's schedule assumes. Service intervals written for temperate climates are optimistic here, and this job is one of the places that shows.

How to tell it was done properly

You should be shown the old part, told what the test read before and after, and given the price you were quoted rather than a revised one. Those three are cheap for an honest workshop to provide and awkward for a dishonest one, which is exactly why they are worth asking for.

What the job includes

  • Four-wheel camber, caster and toe measurement against factory specification
  • Bush, ball joint, link and bearing inspection before adjustment
  • Shock absorber and strut testing and replacement
  • Post-adjustment road test and printed before-and-after figures

Questions we get asked

How do I know if my suspension needs work?

Knocking over bumps, the car continuing to bounce after a dip, uneven tyre wear, the steering pulling to one side, or a steering wheel that sits off-centre on a straight road.

How often should alignment be checked?

Once a year, after any hard kerb or pothole strike, and every time you fit new tyres. Fitting new tyres to a misaligned car ruins them in months.

Is wheel alignment the same as suspension alignment?

Wheel alignment adjusts the angles. Suspension alignment as we use it here includes checking and replacing the worn components that let those angles drift in the first place.
