Most BMW M Roadster calls we take start the same way: it turned over slowly for a few days, then one morning it just clicked.
With a range ending in 2003, this is very likely a conventional car with no start-stop system, which means a good standard battery in the correct group size does the job. AGM would last longer but you would be paying for cycle life the car never uses.
Cooling systems on the N-series engines are the known weak point here — plastic thermostat housings and expansion tanks go brittle with heat and let go without warning. For the battery specifically: park in shade where you can, drive far enough to actually recharge rather than only starting the car, and have it load-tested before summer rather than after. A battery that reads 12.4 volts at rest can still fail its load test, and the load test is the one that predicts the morning it does not start.
The M Roadster is a coupe, and the tighter engine bay means battery height and terminal orientation matter as much as capacity. That is not a detail — battery choice is driven as much by physical size, hold-down type and parked current draw as it is by cranking amps, and getting one of the three wrong is how a correctly-specified battery ends up failing early.
BMW batteries must be registered to the car with a diagnostic tool. Without registration the alternator continues charging to the old battery's profile and the new one is ruined within months. On the M Roadster specifically, which the vehicle database lists across model years 1997 to 2003, the safe approach is to read the label on the battery that is in the car now and match its group size, terminal side and capacity — or to give us the year and let us look it up.
