If your Mazda 626 needed a jump start this week, the useful question is not which battery to buy. It is whether the battery is the fault at all.
I-ELOOP and i-stop models use a specific battery with a capacitor system behind it, and fitting a conventional battery to one causes the stop-start to disable itself. On the 626 specifically, which the vehicle database lists across model years 1979 to 2002, the safe approach is to read the label on the battery that is in the car now and match its group size, terminal side and capacity — or to give us the year and let us look it up.
One loud click with bright dashboard lights is the starter. Rapid clicking with dimming lights is the battery or a corroded terminal. Starting fine and then dying while driving is the alternator. We test all three at the roadside before fitting anything, because replacing a healthy battery on a Mazda 626 with a failing alternator leaves you exactly where you started, two days later.
With a range ending in 2002, this is very likely a conventional car with no start-stop system, which means a good standard battery in the correct group size does the job. AGM would last longer but you would be paying for cycle life the car never uses.
SkyActiv engines are sensitive to oil condition and to the correct grade; the wrong viscosity shows up as a rough idle before it shows up anywhere else. For the battery specifically: park in shade where you can, drive far enough to actually recharge rather than only starting the car, and have it load-tested before summer rather than after. A battery that reads 12.4 volts at rest can still fail its load test, and the load test is the one that predicts the morning it does not start.
